Reds Promote Rhett Lowder to Double-A
On May 8, the Reds announced the promotion of pitcher Rhett Lowder from Advanced-A Dayton to Double-A Chattanooga.
Lowder was selected by the Reds with the seventh overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft and is currently ranked as the organization's No. 2 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The Wake Forest product was dominant through his first four weeks in pro ball. In five starts for the Dayton Dragons, Lowder went 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA and 29 strikeouts over 25.1 IP. Those numbers all led the Dragons, as well as his 0.95 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) and 2.13 walks per nine innings. In addition, opposing batters only managed a .191 batting average against Lowder.
On April 26, Lowder delivered a six-inning shutout performance with three hits, one walk and nine strikeouts in a win at Lansing. With that outing, Lowder became the first Dragons pitchers this season to go six innings, a feat he would duplicate in his next start. His efforts earned him Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 22-28.
